Autodesk Maya is the benchmark 3D tool for India's VFX and animation industry. Pricing is based on annual subscriptions billed in INR through an authorised Autodesk reseller, with Arnold renderer and Bifrost VFX included in every plan.
This guide covers every Maya subscription option in India, what is included, how floating licences work for studios and how the M&E Collection compares to individual seats.
Maya Subscription Plans — India 2025
All pricing is approximate INR through Cloudfy Systems on annual commitment, per user per month, excluding 18% GST.
Autodesk Maya (Individual Subscription) — ~₹17,500/user/month
Every Maya annual subscription includes:
- Full Maya — all modelling, rigging, animation, dynamics and rendering tools
- Arnold for Maya (MtoA) — production ray-trace renderer, CPU and GPU
- Bifrost — visual programming for procedural VFX and simulations
- XGen — hair, fur and feather generation for characters
- MASH — motion graphics and procedural animation network
- HumanIK — motion capture retargeting and full-body IK solver
- Autodesk Docs — 100GB cloud storage
- Latest version always — all updates and new features during subscription
Annual cost per user: Approximately ₹2,10,000–2,20,000 excluding GST.
Media & Entertainment Collection — ~₹28,000/user/month
Includes:
- Autodesk Maya (full + Arnold)
- Autodesk 3ds Max (full + Arnold)
- MotionBuilder (motion capture and character performance)
- Mudbox (digital sculpting and texture painting)
- Additional Arnold render licences
Annual cost per user: Approximately ₹3,36,000–3,48,000 excluding GST.
When is the Collection Worth It?
Buy individual Maya when:
- Your studio works exclusively in Maya for animation, VFX and rendering
- You do not need 3ds Max for environment/archviz work
- Individual seat cost is acceptable
Buy the M&E Collection when:
- Your studio uses both Maya and 3ds Max (common in large VFX pipelines)
- You need MotionBuilder for motion capture workflow
- You need Mudbox for character sculpting and texturing
- The combined cost of Maya + 3ds Max individually exceeds the Collection price
For most Maya-only animation studios in India, the individual subscription is sufficient. For full-service VFX houses handling environments (3ds Max) and characters (Maya) simultaneously, the Collection provides better value.
Arnold Renderer — What Studio Artists Need to Know
Every Maya subscription includes Arnold for Maya (MtoA) — a full production Arnold licence for the workstation.
What's Included
- Unlimited local rendering on the artist's workstation
- GPU rendering (NVIDIA CUDA and AMD HIP)
- All Arnold shaders, lights and procedural nodes
- Interactive IPR viewport rendering
- CPU and GPU hybrid rendering
What Requires Separate Licences
For studios running distributed rendering on render farms:
- Each render farm node requires an Arnold Render Node licence
- Render farm nodes are priced per node on annual subscription
- If using cloud rendering (AWS, GCP, Rebus Farm), the cloud provider typically includes Arnold licences in their per-hour pricing
Cloudfy Systems can advise on render farm Arnold licensing requirements and pricing based on your studio's node count.
Floating Licence Setup for Maya Studios
Studios with multiple Maya artists typically use floating (network) licences rather than individual named-user licences.
How floating licences work:
- A licence server is installed on a dedicated machine in the studio
- Maya users check out a licence when they launch the software
- Licences return to the pool when Maya is closed
- Any machine in the studio can access the pool up to the number of seats purchased
Advantages for studios:
- Licence utilisation is more efficient — a 10-seat floating pool can serve 12-15 artists if not all are using Maya simultaneously
- Supports different machines (workstations, render nodes) from a shared pool
- Easier to manage than per-machine named-user licences
Cloudfy Systems configures Autodesk's Licence Manager (RLSA) for studios requiring floating licence setup.
Maya Pricing for Different Types of Indian Studios
Small Animation Studio (5-10 Seats)
Individual Maya subscriptions for each artist. Named-user accounts tied to Autodesk IDs. Works well for studios where each artist has a dedicated workstation.
Example cost (8 seats): 8 × ₹17,500 = ₹1,40,000/month + GST
VFX Production House (15-30 Seats)
Floating licence pool with RLSA server. Render farm nodes with separate Arnold Render Node licences. M&E Collection if the pipeline uses both Maya and 3ds Max.
Example cost (20 seats, M&E Collection): 20 × ₹28,000 = ₹5,60,000/month + GST
Freelance Animator/Rigger
Single Maya subscription is available. Named-user account tied to personal Autodesk ID. Home and office access on multiple machines (up to 3 devices) with sign-in.
Comparing Maya to Other 3D Animation Tools in India
Indian studios sometimes evaluate Maya against alternatives before purchasing:
Blender (Free): Open-source, no licence cost. Growing adoption in India, particularly for indie animation and lower-budget productions. Lacks Maya's character rigging depth, pipeline integration and industry-standard workflow for large-scale production. Not directly substitutable for studios working with global production pipelines.
Cinema 4D (Maxon): Popular for motion graphics and broadcast design. Used heavily in European and North American studios. Less common in India's VFX pipeline. Priced at approximately ₹6,000-8,000/month.
Houdini (SideFX): The dominant tool for procedural VFX and simulation at the high end of the VFX market. Complementary to Maya rather than competitive — most large VFX pipelines use both. Apprentice (free) and Indie tiers available.
For studios working in Bollywood VFX, OTT content, gaming or global co-productions, Maya is the standard that studio clients, supervisors and pipeline TDs expect — making it the practical default choice.
