What is the difference between a Chromebook and Chromebook Plus?
Chromebook Plus requires minimum 8 GB RAM, a higher-resolution display and a dedicated AI co-processor — these specifications enable on-device Gemini AI and Google's Help Me features. Standard Chromebooks typically have 4 GB RAM and are designed for core classroom tasks (Classroom, Meet, Docs, Drive). Both run ChromeOS and are managed the same way via Admin Console.
Do all Chromebooks need Chrome Education Upgrade (CEU)?
Not technically — Chromebooks work as consumer devices without CEU. However, for institutional deployment where you need to manage apps, enforce policies, remote-wipe devices and enroll using Zero Touch Enrollment, CEU is essential. Without CEU, each Chromebook is unmanaged and you lose central IT control.
Can ChromeOS Flex be managed the same way as Chromebooks?
Yes. ChromeOS Flex devices can be enrolled in Google Admin Console using Chrome Education Upgrade, just like physical Chromebooks. They receive the same ChromeOS security updates and can be managed with the same policies. The main limitation is that ChromeOS Flex doesn't support the Android app ecosystem.

The licence stays with the device, not the student, so when a student leaves, the device (with its CEU) can be reassigned to a new student.
